Rural Crime is a growing issue here in Butte County. I’d like to use this column recognize some Farm Bureau Members in Biggs who
are being pro active in the fight against rural crime. EBLR Farm Watch was started up by Mike Kawasaki and other farmers in his
neighborhood. They have created a website for all members, bumper stickers, member database, and have quarterly meetings. They
have developed a working relationship with the Sherriff’s Office and the area Deputy Jeff McNulty. If you would like more
information on how to start a farm watch in your area please contact me at (530)533-1473for more information.
BCFB held a rural crime meeting in early July with the Sherriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Gridley-Biggs Police
Department, CFBF and Farm Bureau members. The meeting was a step in the right direction on combating rural crime. Sherriff Perry
Reniff discussed his frustrations with Sacramento and some new legislation that is in the works and budget cuts his office is
going to face in the next year. Perry said that it’s scary that they want to release 25,000 prisoners back into the community
that have committed non-violent crimes. Non-Violent crimes charges are what happen on the farm and ranches. Petty theft, drugs,
and trespassing all fit into that category. This will be over loading your local law enforcement agencies with potential
criminals again. I would like to encourage all Farm Bureau members to join FARM TEAM. Farm Team is an easy way to drop a note to
Sacramento about how the legislation they are writing effects you and your bottom line. The good, the bad and the ugly voices
need to be heard and bills need to be supported to get passed. Hopefully this year the AB 844 metal Theft ordnance will be passed.
